How I think about AI
Three questions for every task.
Business owners spend about 11 hours a week on admin, according to a July 2026 survey of 1,000 owners by American Express and Small Business Saturday UK: the formatting, the follow-up, the double-checking. And the industry keeps renaming the technology: assistant, copilot, agent, digital coworker. The names will keep changing. These three questions won't.
What would you hand an intern?
The stuff that eats your Tuesday: sorting the inbox, chasing the quote you sent last week, typing up meeting notes. If a sharp new hire could do it by day three, the tools can probably do it too.
What would you never let one touch?
Your best customer's phone call. Pricing. Anything you'd lose sleep over if it went wrong. And anything you like doing. If you like that job, don't give it to AI.
How would you explain it?
AI is the intern who walks in on day one, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, with no clue what an office is. It only knows what you tell it. So tell it who you are, who the work is for, and what good looks like. Then check its work until it earns your trust.
Hand off the busywork, keep the meaningful work, and get back to the parts of your business you chose it for.
